ALL KINDS OF “SPORTS”

Here’s a few thoughts on all kinds of sports. Obviously this is inspired by “Super Bowl LVII”, where apparently the National Football League is the only entity remaining that still uses Roman numerals. There was a significant amount of athleticism on display during that game, but professional athletes are not the only ones who can compete in “sports”.

In my mind, sports can encompass a wide variety of activities. There are many that can be used in a team concept, such as football, basketball, lacrosse, softball, and any number of events that are familiar to most Americans. There are others, such as golf or tennis, where it is generally an individual who competes against other individuals. Sometimes it is even possible to compete against only yourself. And maybe you don’t even keep score.

Personally, at my age, I often prefer those activities where you find a way to compete against only yourself. The goal is often to just get better at the activity, to improve over time, to become somewhat more proficient in progression. This would include things like marksmanship (with firearm or bow), walking a measured distance in a time span, or even something as far from sport as possible such as stacking wood.

We can all find something that fits in one of those categories to fuel our competitive juices. Our goal, no matter what the activity, should always be to improve. Sometimes that activity can be overtly competitive. Other times the competition need only be within our own mind. There’s an ethical saying in outdoor wilderness activities to “Leave No Trace”. The idea is to pass through the wilderness in such a way that no one can tell you were there. My advice is to “leave an internal trace” and be a better person today than you were yesterday. That may be the most challenging “sport” of all.
