Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt (a personal hero) had his joy for life described by a friend as an “unpacking of endless Christmas stockings”. And according to Teddy’s own words, he saw the holiday of Christmas as one of “literally delirious joy”. Perhaps by looking a little closer, we can find some advice for today around the holiday, and every day.
As a boy growing up in New York City, Theodore watch as his father (Theodore, Sr.) set the generous example. Each Christmas, Theodore, Sr. would donate time and money to the causes he supported. When Teddy was in residence at Sagamore Hill (Oyster Bay, Long Island) during Christmas, he would distribute gifts to children at the local school with the exclamation “Bully Christmas!”. Some historians suggest that Teddy may even have dressed as Santa, but this is unconfirmed.
It really doesn’t matter whether one dresses in a Santa costume when doing good during the holidays (and at other times as well). It is not one’s appearance that is important, what matters is the spirit of generosity in the heart. Certainly one can be generous all year long. Each of us will have something to give to someone in tough circumstances, even if that “gift” is time or a listening ear.
It really doesn’t matter what one gives, it matters that one does give. The topic is often discussed (and acted upon) at Christmas but generosity can flow through the entire year. It is both an attitude and an action that can accompany us throughout our lives. We each have something to share with someone else. Choose to do good (Santa suit optional).
