As summer slowly turns into autumn, there is a sense of melancholy in the air. Although meteorological summer will stay for a bit longer, the metaphorical summer has come to an end. Some of my favorite end-of-summer activities have passed, like the Stone Tool Craftsman Show and the Great New York State Fair. Even Labor Day is in the rear view mirror. Schools are back in session and the college football season is up and running. But there is still time to enjoy many of the activities we associate with summer.
The month of September (and sometimes October) always has a number of summer-like days; with weather conditions that are often warm (even hot), sunny, and occasionally humid. People are anxiously watching the weather forecasts in the hopes of a nice weekend for their outdoor plans. We hate to “waste” those types of days on work or errands. Sometimes we are even loath to do chores such as lawn mowing on sunny weekends, preferring to spend our remaining warm time in having fun. Of course, weather being what it is, we often do not receive the conditions we hope to experience. Late summer into early fall is a time of change and the weather reflects that reality.
Some of the leaves start to turn from green into red, yellow, and orange but not all of them. Sometimes it is just a single small branch that changes color early and the remainder wait for an extended cooler period. And as we slip further into autumn more and more of the leaves change color and fall to the ground. At least they provide some good nutrients for the soil under the grass, which in turn will give thicker healthier grass to mow in the spring and summer. The annual cycle of seasons continues, even though we may regret the departure of one as the next takes its turn.
There is certainly time to enjoy a few more picnics, trips to the beach or amusement park, short family vacations, or a road trip to a favorite destination. Summer has not truly ended, nor has autumn pushed its way forward. There are still ample times to be outside and enjoy the thrills of summer. One must take the opportunities that are presented. Soon enough there will be a thick blanket of snow on the ground, which will provide a backdrop for different outdoor activities. But I’m not willing to rush the advent of autumn and winter just yet. Summer is still here and there will be more chances to experience the possibilities.
