Students have returned to schools and colleges. The leaves are starting to change color. Daylight hours are decreasing and the darkness is encroaching. The temperature overall is dropping, although there have been lovely stretches of warmer, sunny weather. The final push to get crops harvested and have the fields ready for winter is happening.
Birds, squirrels, and other woodland beings are preparing for winter by stashing food, growing thicker coats, and preparing suitable shelter. Hunting seasons are opening for small game and bowhunting for deer.
Of course, there are approaching holidays too. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year are bearing down on us like a runaway horse. This brings a sense of joy and wonder at what we might encounter. Family, friends, and occasions for extra cheer are part of that holiday season. Some of joy is amplified, and some diminished, depending on how we assess the passing of another year. In any case, the anticipation of the changing seasons is part of the enjoyment. Everyone would likely not be happy with weather that is a constant 70 degrees and sunny. As the old saying goes, “Into each life some rain must fall”. Those in northern climes can add “snow” to that saying while those in the southern regions can add “heat”. In any case, the earth turns and seasons change regardless of human wishes and desires.
